GUIDELINES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL RECOVERY PROCEDURE

(Applies also to the credit-bearing courses in middle school: Algebra I, Geometry, 8th Grade Foreign Language)

Purpose
The purpose of the recovery procedure is to give students the opportunity to improve their grades.

Definitions
  • A failing grade is any grade of 69 or below.
  • A significant decline in cumulative grade is defined as a decline in the cumulative grade of ten or more points.
  • A cumulative grade includes at least two major grades. A change in the cumulative grade cannot be determined until the third major grade is recorded.

Guidelines
  1. Teachers are required to give students interim progress reports (i.e., between regular reporting periods) if a student’s cumulative grade is 74 or below. Parents and students are encouraged to use Parent Connect frequently to keep track of student performance.
  2. It is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher for a recovery assignment.
  3. The student must have completed all work required to date and put forth effort to meet all course requirements including attendance (no more than three unexcused absences per six weeks for traditional schedule schools, two per four and one-half weeks for block high schools and middle schools).
  4. Students must complete all recovery assignments before the last ten days of the semester. Consequently, there is no recovery opportunity for the final exam.
  5. Because the End of Course Tests are state-regulated and secured, there is no recovery for the End of Course Test where it applies.
  6. Recovery opportunities must be directly related to the unit of study’s objectives for which the recovery is sought.
  7. The grade will be the average of the initial and recovery assessment and will replace the initial grade.
